The Gospel

From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
— Matthew 4:17

Sisters and brothers, I invite you to take a moment to meditate on the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.  It is the good news, the best news, the most glorious message ever delivered.  Zion, the kingdom of heaven, has come near.  Our Lord Jesus, himself, stands at the door of your heart and knocks.

What does that mean?  It means that our sense of being alone, isolated, and cut off is a lie.  You are not alone.  You are never alone.  Not only are you connected to God, but to all the saints of heaven, and all the just on earth.  So repent, which means change your mind – your very way of thinking, and enter Zion through the call of our Lord.

God is NOT angry with you.

The greatest lie arising from the darkness is that God is mad at you, and that if you do not fall on your knees and beg forgiveness, you will burn in hell for all eternity.  God is not angry with you.  God loves you.  No matter what happens, no matter what you do, God will never turn away from you.  Jesus showed his love for us, because he is the love of God come to us to make us whole.

Remember when you were young and innocent, and lived metaphorically in the purity of the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:7-8).  You were happy and at peace, then something happened to strip you of your innocence, and you ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  Your eyes were opened and you saw the darkness in the world (Gen 3:1-7).  In that moment, you turned the eyes of your soul from the Light of God to the darkness of the world.  The shadows of this world are like a thick fog that keeps us from the love of God (Gen 3:8-10).  As a result, it is hard to see the plant for the thorns, and work for the labor.  Walking alone in this world makes our work into labor and hides the joy of the Lord in shadows (Gen 3:17-19).

You cannot see someone you always keep behind you, but God has never left your side.  It is hard to see the sun when you are lost in the fog, but the sun is still there.

There is nothing you can do to make God give up on you.

Have you done worse things than the people Christ forgave?

  • if your heart as been broken so much that you have given up on love, God loves you and will embrace you to take away your pain (John 4:1-26)
  • if you have done so much that you have lost your reputation in the eyes of your community, God loves you and and welcomes you home (Luke 7:37-50)
  • if you have taken advantage of your community for your own profit and advancement, God loves you and wants you to show that same love to all the people around you (Luke 19:1-10)
  • if you have denied Christ and in shame abandoned all that you ever believed, God loves you and is waiting for you to turn to back to your first love (John 21:1-19)
  • if you suffer and are infirm, God loves you and reaches out to heal (Matt 9:1-9; Mark 2:2-12; Luke 5:18-26)
  • if you have stolen and have mocked the source of life even until the end, God loves you and waits for you to open your heart to the Creator of the Cosmos (Luke 23:39-43)

Forgiveness is removing shadows so you can see the Light.

God is with you.  Jesus is with you, and his heart is on fire with love for you.  To those who love the Lord, that fire kindles with them to restore the Divine Image in which we are all made.  To those who choose to live in Darkness, the fire of Christ love burns.  It is the same fire from the same heart, but when we are broken by shadows, the power that should fuel and feed us, cannot do what it should.

We can return to peace and joy.  There is an end to suffering.  When the Sacred Heart of Christ replaces our own broken hearts, we can learn to live again the great kingdom of the Prince of Peace.  "Seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue;  whereby he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust (2 Peter 1:3-4 WEB)."

Christ loves you, and wants to make you whole.

May the Light of God shine upon you, delivering you from darkness, for "in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.  He was the true light that enlightens everyone coming into the world (John 1:4,5,9)."

Open your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ, so he can re-create you as a glorious child of Zion.  The light of God guides us to Zion, and through our cooperation conforms us to the Living Word of God.

If you wish to respond to the call of the gospel, then pray:

Holy Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, I recognize that I have turned from the holy way. I have wandered in darkness, but now I feel the warm glow of the Light of Life shining upon me.

Release me from darkness and error, and fill me with your Holy Spirit, our guide to all truth. Turn my eyes toward the light so I may walk the path to Zion.

Ever bring to my remembrance that You are the one in whom we live, move, and have our being. Take my hand, and lead me until the day that Christ Jesus is born in me and through me. Amen.
This, then, is salvation, when we marvel at the beautiful providence of their Creator or when we purchase heavenly goods by our compassion for the works of creation.
Meister Eckhart, Passion for Creation, loc 395
